The Drop is exactly what it sounds like — a wall reef that falls away sharply from 50 feet down to 90, offering the kind of open-water exposure that makes you feel the scale of the ocean in a way that shallow patch reefs simply don't.
The upper section of the wall holds dense coral growth — sea fans, barrel sponges, and hard coral formations that shelter the usual reef residents. As you descend, the structure opens up and the water column becomes the focus. This is where the Spotted Eagle Rays appear, gliding past at mid-water with the unhurried elegance that makes them one of the most sought-after sightings in Islamorada. They don't always show up, but the depth and open exposure of The Drop gives you the best chance of being in the right place when they do.
At 90 feet, the wall meets the sandy bottom. Larger species — Grouper, Barracuda, the occasional Nurse Shark — hold position in the deeper zones. Bottom time is shorter at this depth, so the dive rewards divers who know how to pace themselves and use their time in the water intentionally.
